If you need any proof that mobile is the way of the future, look no further than Google’s mobile-friendly update to search algorithms. With this new release, mobile-friendly sites will be given higher priority and rankings than their non-mobile-friendly counterparts.

According to Google, “…we will be expanding our use of mobile-friendliness as a ranking signal. This change will affect mobile searches in all languages worldwide and will have a significant impact in our search results. Consequently, users will find it easier to get relevant, high quality search results that are optimized for their devices.”

Google will continue to use other factors in ranking search results, so high quality content pages which are not mobile-friendly, could still get a high ranking. Rankings are page-level, and mobile-friendly pages on a site will get higher rankings than non-mobile-friendly pages.

The rollout begins on April 21st, and will take approximately one week for all sites to be indexed by Google. Every time a website is crawled and indexed, Google will determine its mobile-friendliness. Pages can be tested using this mobile-friendly testing tool from Google.

With video comprising over half of all internet traffic, a 50% bandwidth reduction is a substantial improvement.

VP9 is currently supported in the Chrome browser and on Android devices such as the Samsung Galaxy S6, Sony TVs and console games from Sony, LG, Sharp and more.

In less than two years, GoDaddy has made its 6th purchase. A hosting company by the name Media Temple is GoDaddy’s next venture. Media Temple is well known for hosting very large websites for Volkswagen and The Wall Street Journal. Media Temple also has over 125,000 customers and hosts more than 1.5 million websites. GoDaddy’s CEO Blake Irving stated “The people at Media Temple ‘get’ Web pros and developers.” Mr. Irving also adds the results of this acquisition will “reach a more technical audience” that it has in the past.

GoDaddy’s New Changes

One of the biggest changes for GoDaddy will be the website. Under Blake’s supervision and management, the site will appear less technical. That can be huge for people that don’t have the technical background for websites and design. This new look will be appealing for small business owners and marketers. With GoDaddy’s new look, the Media Temple website will be able to cater to more of a technical type of audience. The new appearances will be able to compliment both sites well, and make the overall experience for the user better.

Media Temple’s Independence

Another big surprise about the acquisition is the fact that Media Temple will be operated as a separate company, and will not be integrated into GoDaddy. Any discounts and coupons will not be interchangeable between the two companies. Virb is a website builder acquired by Media Temple in 2012 will not be included in this deal. The original founders/investors will be purchasing Virb.

The new changes for Media Temple and GoDaddy are going to be new and exciting. With a bright new management team and an infusion of cash, GoDaddy is proving to be a fierce leader in technology and interactive with new improvements for both its existing customers and new customers. The information and data provided can be found at www.smallbiztrends.com.

Google recently released its new version of Penguin 2.1 on October 4, 2013. This release would make it the 5th release of Penguin. What does all of this information mean? 1% of the searches will be impacted. The interesting part about all of the Penguin updates is all of the previous releases of Penguin prior to the release of 2.1.

The History Of Google’s Penguin

Just where did this spam fighting algorithm come from and why so many updates? Let’s briefly go over when the releases happened and what was the impact of each.

Penguin 1 was released on April 24, 2012. The impact of this release was around 3.1% of the queries. This version targeted keyword stuffing, link schemes, doorway pages, and duplicate content.

Penguin 2 was released on May 26, 2012, but only impacted less that 0.1% of queries. This particular version was called a “data refresh” and the first update of the Penguin series.

Penguin 3 was released on October 5, 2012 impacting approximately 0.3% of the queries. The update affected searches for multiple languages.

Penguin 4 aka Penguin 2.0 was released on May 22, 2013. The impact of this version impacted 2.3% of the queries. 2.0 had a new twist that should stop all of the spam.

Penguin 5 aka Penguin 2.1 was released on October 4, 2013 with a 1% impact. Second generation technology is being implemented to improve the issues with spam.

Google’s overall search algorithm is monitored by Penguin. If you are in a situation where you have noticed a drop in traffic, then it’s time to take a look at your site. Bad links and poor quality sites are going to be red flagged, therefore you will have to improve your site. Until Penguin sees the content is removed, you are going to have a problem. The best way to avoid this problem is to check your content and links.

Youtube is famous for being the website to go check out free videos for almost anything. Most people do not realize that Youtube can also be a SEO force that will really help promote your business or website if you follow ten tips that truly will get you further in your marketing and promotion.

Ten Tips Using Youtube That Will Enhance Your SEO

Here are ten tips that will give you a boost on your SEO without having to do anything too complicated.

Geotag your video – customers and clients need to know where your location is, so they are able to come to your store location.

Link your business in the description – this is a no brainer! You want to make it as easy as possible for potential clients to find your website.

Include your name, address, and phone number – place this information near the end of the video. You might even include the URL of your business website near the end of the video as well.

When you are making the video, be sure to vocally state your name, address, and phone number. Google’s systems are picking up all of this information.

Utilize the description field – this is very important to write a description with plenty of details. You might even include a short bio with all of the generous space you have to work with.

Tag your video – be sure to include your business category and location names on the video. Also, add a handful of relevant tags for each video.

Associate the video with your Google places listing.

Embed your video – the importance of this is huge. You want to be sure your video is on your website and blogs, because this helps indicate the popularity of the videos.

Promote your video – take the time to post your video on all of the major social media sites.

These ten tips are going to help you on your way to Youtube success, but also SEO as well. Google has identified that people love videos, so what better way that to take your business and get it on Youtube.

Millions of Internet users are familiar with Yahoo and Google because of all of the features each of these sites utilize. However, most would be very surprised to hear that Yahoo is once again the leader of the pack. Yahoo has a very strong CEO with a voice that is grabbing attention right and left. Marissa Mayer is taking the aged Internet power house and making Yahoo a force to be reckoned with.

Yahoo Strong Stability

An interesting fact about Yahoo is that the site was never really that far behind Google at any point in time. The two powerhouse sites have always been close in terms of traffic. In July, 197 million people visited the Yahoo with a strong second place going to Google with 192 million people visiting during the same time period. Yahoo’s decision to appoint Marissa Mayer as the CEO has been a great one, because she has been able to grab headlines right and left for Yahoo.

Where Did This Boost Come From?

If one was to review Yahoo’s traffic for 2013, the traffic is going to demonstrate Yahoo was never very far behind. Even before Mayer came on as the chief executive, Yahoo’s traffic was holding on in the ranking.

The most important category to focus on was making sure mobile devices were paid close attention too. Mayer made a bold decision to give $200 million dollars to the development of mobile apps and making sure every mobile user would have a friendly experience with Yahoo.

Revamping the Yahoo experience to make it even better than before. Mayer’s first huge makeover was Yahoo Mail in December. Right after Yahoo Mail got a makeover, next came the home page of Yahoo was also re-designed. Improving and re-designing Yahoo’s sites make a huge difference.

Yahoo.com is going to be a very exciting website to watch over the next year with all of the amazing improvements, and the apps are going to be even better. With Mayer on board each person following the improvements of Yahoo is going to be pleasantly surprised with her innovative spirit and her passion to make Yahoo be a huge success.

Google has a reputation around the world for being the leading search engine, and perhaps global company, that’s always on the cusp of the latest digital technology. However, recently the company has been scrutinized for their decision to place about $10 billion in revenue in a Bermuda shell corporation in an effort to avoid nearly $2 billion in global taxes.

To put this number into perspective, just three years ago Google didn’t place half as much money in such a shell company. The reason Google, and many other large corporations like it, moves funds every year to Bermuda is simply because it does not have a corporate income tax. This allows for companies to slice their tax rates nearly in half every year. This transfer also allows for corporations like Google to boost revenue in times of economic hardship.

Though the transferring of funds to Bermuda is completely legal companies around the world are criticizing the multi billion-dollar corporation for avoiding such taxes. However, Google’s rebuttal is simply that they not only comply with all tax rules but also help employ thousands of individuals around the world each year and have helped thousands of businesses grow and expand with their various services and support.

For millions of employees and employers Monday morning brought along some additional stress as Gmail experienced a brief outage, causing various businesses emails to become debilitated. Though the disruption affected personal Gmail accounts as well, those most affected were businesses whose workday was disrupted due to such an inconvenience. Google noted this issue as a “global service disruption,” and also advised that Chrome was experiencing crashing in some instances.

The issue was resolved and Gmail was functioning properly by early Monday afternoon. For many, the outage though short (lasting a mere 10 minutes for some), created a feeling of fear and distrust towards cloud services such as Gmail, Google Apps, and Google Drive. Many of these cloud services are what businesses rely on to help organize projects and allow for tasks to get completed quickly and efficiently.

Various media outlets reported on the incident. However, the site that appeared to create the most buzz around the issue was Twitter. Tweets around the world circulated and served as the voice of frustration surrounding the outage.

As Tuesday came and businesses resumed their normal day-to-day activities employees remained optimistic of Gmail’s functionality, yet uncertain of just how trusting they could be of such a service.

Apple’s goal of providing the best product on the market has been evident in their sales records and product popularity. So, what’s the deal with its change in Maps with iOS6? Could the choice to pull out of a deal with Google have unspoken intentions?

Previously, maps on Apple’s products were provided by Google. When about a year was left on the collaborative deal, Apple decided to use its own Maps application in the iPhone 5 and iOS6. This decision left Google scrambling to develop their own iOS Google Maps app, which remains incomplete and is not schedule to ship for months. Many sources propose that Apple’s problem was as long as they remained under the power of Google Maps, their own mobile mapping would remain inferior. The risky decision: release an inferior map product of their own while riding the wave of a strong market position in hopes of developing a superior product in the near future. The possibility of not paying off on an improved maps product is a gamble, but one Apple is willing to take.

As both companies race to create the best mobile map application in 12 months time, consumers wait to see what time will tell.

According to trend reports from Google, fewer people are curious about computers these days. In the days of new gagets and gizmos, this factoid seems shocking. But it’s true. According to Google’ search trend data, the line has decreased since 2004 in the number of searches for computer and electronics related terms, e.g. mac, windows, ipod, dell, sony, hp, xbox. Of course, there are some seasonal breaks in this line, but the trend is a downward slop.

Does this mean people are less interested in the subject or could it mean that we are more educated about these devices and have less of a need to search for information? It could also mean consumers don’t brand shop like they may have previously, so there is less comparative shopping.

Whatever the reason may be, the numbers tell us that the number of people interested in topics related to laptops, desktops and other computer related topics is about half what it was in 2004.
