HTML5 For Corporate Websites

Let’s take some time to review the statistics of HTML5 and how effective it has been with companies and generating revenue.

Among Fortune 500 companies 30.6 percent are using HTML5 for their company websites.

An interesting fact: The 153 companies that did use HTML5 of their digital properties in 2012 generated more profits than the 161 companies using XHTML 1.0 Transitional. Yet, XHTML 1.0 Transitional is still the most popular with 32.2 percent.

HTML 4.0 Transitional and HTML 4.01 Strict has only a mere 7.8 percent when combined together.

With HTML5 and XHTML 1.0 coming so close together percentage wise, it would make most industry professional want to predict whether or not HTML5 will slowly begin a take over for the 2014. We all know when a product or service increases revenue, it gains positive attention, and users will begin to make the switch. What does the future of HTML5 have in store?

Congratulations! You’ve launched your business website, and you are beginning to see traffic flow increase. How many versions of your site have you created? Is it compatible with MS Explorer, Firefox, and Safari? Do you have a mobile version? Does it work on a Blackberry? How about an iPhone? Have you considered its compatibility with tablets like the iPad, netbook, or Kindle? In reality, it’s impractical to keep up with the endless resolutions and devices. So, what do we do? Are web designers forced to choose among the devices to gain some visitors only to lose others when some devices are neglected? Surely there’s another option. There is another option, and it comes in the form of responsive web design.

Responsive Design

BostonGlobe.com, an example of HTML5 Responsive Design

Responsive web design has its roots in emerging responsive architecture. This way of designing rooms and spaces incorporates technology that automatically adjusts according to the number of occupants or the flow of people. For example, some climate control systems can adjust a room’s temperature and ambient lighting as it fills with people. Responsive web design applies that idea to website technologies. Using this approach, websites will be able to respond to the user’s behavior and environment to adjust screen size, platform, and orientation. Using a mix of flexible grids, layouts, images, and an intelligent use of CSS media queries, the responsive web design senses the appropriate resolution image size and scripting abilities necessary for that particular device or medium. If the user transitions from a laptop to their iPad, the website should automatically respond to the user’s preferences. Web developers using responsive web design will provide the best experience possible to the user in terms of navigability and readability. This advancement would eliminate the need for a different design and development phase for each new gadget on the market.

Keep in mind that responsive web design is not simply reducing font sizes and resizing a picture. Rather, designers and web developers collaborate to determine how to reorganize the elements according to resolution, establish which elements may be unnecessary, and preserve concepts while simplifying structure.

A benefit of responsive web design is that it doesn’t require a lot of learning to use, and it can be a great deal less stressful than learning how to code and design for each device on the market. While it is not the final answer to the continuously- changing mobile world, is can improve the user experience. With responsive web design, we have the ability to create custom experiences for a wider range of users, on a wider range of devices.

However, as it was announced few weeks ago by Vic Gundotra, Google brings Google Voice to the iPhone “one way or the other!”

Mr. Paquet , senior product manager for Google Voice said that the mobile Web version of Google Voice for the iPhone (which works indeed for any other mobile Web browser that understands HTML5) was not meant as a slap to Apple and AT&T, but as “a way to make sure that people who have been asking to use Google Voice on the iPhone have a way to do so,” he said.

You can access a Web version of the Google Voice on your cell phone at m.google.com/voice.

Last week, in a move that has sparked much heated debate, Google announced it was dropping H.264 support from Chrome’s HTML5 video tag.

According to the post at The Chromium Blog, posted by Google Product Manager Mike Jazayeri, “Specifically, we are supporting the WebM (VP8) and Theora video codecs, and will consider adding support for other high-quality open codecs in the future. Though H.264 plays an important role in video, as our goal is to enable open innovation, support for the codec will be removed and our resources directed towards completely open codec technologies.”

He also added the changes would not be immediate, but would take place over the next few months. WebM project team is currently preparing WebM plug-ins for Safari and Internet Explorer 9, neither of which include it themselves. Basically, WebM is an open, royalty-free, media file format designed for the web. H.264 is a next-generation video compression format. It is not open, or royalty free.

Those in support of Google’s decision point to the fact that H.264 licenses cost money, and that large companies like Google are helping out the little guy by choosing this open alternative. Those against Google’s decision contend that it will set the adoption of HTML5 video back even further. Also, for online video publishers, it could create even more confusion and possibly a massive increase in video publishing costs.

What does it mean? Web developers should more likely implement HTML5 into web projects. With that environment, the new standard is going to flourish and new features of HTML5 will became common techniques faster than we expected few months ago.

The latest official versions of browsers are currently: Internet Explorer 8.0, Firefox 3.6, Chrome 7.0, Safari 5.0 and Opera 10.6.

The summary of the repprt shows that:
– 91% of Chrome users run version 7.0.
– 81% of Firefox users run version 3.6.
– 77% of Opera users run version 10.6.
– 71% of Safari users run version 5.0.

HTML5 is the future of web development. Figures like Apple CEO Steve Jobs and Google CEO Eric Schmidt promote the standard and make it trendy. Many web developers already started creating websites with features provided by HTML5. However, the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), the official standards organization of the Web, declares that it is too early for the HTML5 to be use broadly on the web.

Phillippe Le Hegaret from W3C told InfoWorld, “The problem we’re facing right now is there is already a lot of excitement for HTML5, but it’s a little too early to deploy it because we’re running into interoperability issues.” He also mentioned that the HTML5 specification will be “feature-complete by mid-2011,” so Flash will be commonly used on the web for a while.

HTML5 is still very new way of displaying video on web. On an official YouTube blog we can read that the company has to use Flash technology in order to meet all the needs of a site like YouTube. HTML5 < video > tag does not provide yet a good enough experience for viewers as well as content creators.

An official statement for apiblog.youtube.com:
There’s been a lot of discussion lately about whether or not the HTML5 < video > tag is going to replace Flash Player for video distribution on the web. We’ve been excited about the HTML5 effort and < video > tag for quite a while now, and most YouTube videos can now be played via our HTML5 player. This work has shown us that, while the < video > tag is a big step forward for open standards, the Adobe Flash Platform will continue to play a critical role in video distribution.

It’s important to understand what a site like YouTube needs from the browser in order to provide a good experience for viewers as well as content creators. We need to do more than just point the browser at a video file like the image tag does – there’s a lot more to it than just retrieving and displaying a video. The < video > tag certainly addresses the basic requirements and is making good progress on meeting others, but the < video > tag does not currently meet all the needs of a site like YouTube.

According to Adam de Boor (a staff software engineer from Google) many upcoming features of the Gmail will be rendered in HTML5. De Boor said that Gmail with HTML5 will be much more efficient. Early tests have proved promising. Google has found that using CSS3 can speed the rendering time by 12 percent.

HTML5 allows building new features for Gmail. For example one feature that the Gmail design team already created is the ability to drag files from the desktop into the browser. However, this feature works only with very few browsers, one of them is Chrome.

HTML5 is currently under development as the next major revision of the HTML standard. Like its immediate predecessors, HTML 4.01 and XHTML 1.1, HTML5 is a standard for structuring and presenting content on the World Wide Web. The new standard incorporates features like video playback and drag-and-drop that have been previously dependent on third-party browser plug-ins such as Adobe Flash, Microsoft Silverlight, and Google Gears. Source: Wikipedia
