ATT is improving its service in New York City

I just received this text message from ATT – “Committed to improving you superior service, we recently launched a new cell site that will enhance coverage between W 110th and 116th street and surrounding area.”

That sounds like an another good news for New Yorkers. More than a week ago we mentioned about Wi-Fi coming to New York City Subway.

Next year The New York Times will start charging for an access to its online resources. Even that we still are guessing what it will look like, there are some unofficial numbers available.

Possible prices:
– an access to the Times for a 24 hour period will probably cost $2
– monthly web access – $10
– monthly access via web, smartphone app, iPad app and eReader – $15

Wi-Fi is coming to New York City Subway

Bloomberg reports that $200 million will be spent to wire six subterranean stations in New York City. It will take about two years to add Wi-Fi along 14th Street at Sixth, Seventh and Eighth avenues and 23rd Street and Eighth Avenue. During another four years city will install antennas in the remaining 271.

Thanks to this project, riders in New York City will enjoy mobile phone and Wi-Fi service on the platform, mezzanines and portions of the subway tunnels. Wireless providers such as AT&T, Verizon and Sprint will pay for access to the network.

Subways in Singapore, Berlin and Tokyo few years ago started providing to their travelers Wi-Fi. Plans to bring cell phone and wireless Internet service to New York City subways was announced in 2007 but then nothing took place because of a shortage of funding.

Free internet in Starbucks

During a Wired’s Business Conference in New York City, Starbucks? Howard Schultz announced that Starbucks is partnering with Yahoo in order to offer free Wifi. Customers will be able to enjoy free Wifi while drinking coffee beginning July 1.

Right now you can connect to AT&T WiFi in Starbucks stores, and it is free for 2 hours if you have a registered Starbucks card. Also if you are an AT&T customer, you can access Wifi for free. However, if you are not a registered Starbucks or AT&T customer, there is a fee of $3.99 for two hours of Wi-Fi access.

New York City limits Art Vendors in NY Parks

The Department of Parks and Recreation is planning to slice the number of vendors allowed at some of Manhattan’s busiest parks like Central Park, Union Square Park, Battery Park and the High Line Park. Bloomberg administration proposes on Friday to cut their numbers by 75 percent. Among reasons behind the decision are suggestions that vendors block sidewalks and slow down pedestrians. Even if it is not a clear move against artists, the decision will slightly limit places where people can sell art.

Why doing business in a place as expensive as New York City? Businesses in the city pays triple what they should be paying for office space anywhere else. However, salaries are at least double what they would be anywhere else. There are hundreds of thousands of small businesses in New York City and some of the Fortune 500 companies. It is really good place to do business! The city has very talented people, you can be near your clients and your competition.

New York City and Governors Island Park

After more than a year of negotiations, New York City is able to take control of Governors Island and convert a big part of the former military outpost into a public park. Last month, New York City reached a similar agreement with the state to take over Brooklyn Bridge Park.
