The digital world is already familiar with flat design. It was not until the mid 2000’s that flat design (also known as Metro design) started be used in web design. Flat design’s goal was to achieve simplification and rely more on typography, instead of relying on graphics.

Pros/Cons of the Flat Experience

Flat design consists of a few key components that make this design so simplified.

Improving the user experience has always been a major goal. Once gradients, patterns, textures, and shadows are added into a design, it can become very cluttered and messy. Simplistic design elements are the main focus of flat design.

Content must be high caliber, otherwise a user could get bored quickly. Distractions are not the sole focus of the design that is why making sure any type of content is well put together.

Flat design is very popular with mobile apps, however one concern that arises is being able to match color palettes to existing designs.

The selection of the best fonts for pairing is another must for flat design. Every time a font pair is chose, it has to be ideal. The reason for this is the degree of impact of the font and whether or not is the wrong choice of font for the site design typography.

Skeuomorphic design is optimized by flat design because of its amazing ability to create illusions with the end result of an “idea”. Skeuomorphic design is great for discouraging boredom in flat design UI.

Ultimately – flat design is a trend that will stick around for a long time. The goal for this user interface is to improve the users’ experience and keep the design simplistic which is optimal for both websites and mobile apps.

Reducing the design of a website can achieve minimalism, and make the website become nothing more than the barest elements. However, doing this difficult task can also be intimidating and for some very hard to master.

Anyone Can Master Minimalism

With the proper fundamentals and the ability to break down the barest elements, minimalist design is achievable and getting in touch with the current trends is simplistic. Here are a few examples that will help a web designer get the simple web design appearance.

Less is More – this statement was popularized by architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. The goal is using less to achieve more of an effect, which will achieve a simplistic yet functioning simple web design.

Omitting Needless Things – only focus on things that contribute to the content or function. A terrific example is a simple grey background. With simple typography and minimal effects, a website can have the simple flare that is desired.

Subtract Elements – crafting a simple website can also be achieved with subtracting elements until the site just doesn’t function anymore. A great way to get this appearance is a simple single column body with a three-column footer. Anything taken or added from this look would make the site less user-friendly.

Making Details Count – the most important fact about details is making each individual is a vital contribution. Minimalist web design can be funky, yet modern and clean with sophistication.

Color – minimalist web design takes on a very interesting approach when color is added. The right color or accent will be able to make the design of the website ideal. The color white is also the backbone to any minimalist website.

Minimalist web design has been around for a very long time, and there are plenty of trends to this unique design. The key is taking away from a website to the point it’s lifeless, then bringing back subtle hints until the desired look is achieved and of course – user-friendly.

In less than two years, GoDaddy has made its 6th purchase. A hosting company by the name Media Temple is GoDaddy’s next venture. Media Temple is well known for hosting very large websites for Volkswagen and The Wall Street Journal. Media Temple also has over 125,000 customers and hosts more than 1.5 million websites. GoDaddy’s CEO Blake Irving stated “The people at Media Temple ‘get’ Web pros and developers.” Mr. Irving also adds the results of this acquisition will “reach a more technical audience” that it has in the past.

GoDaddy’s New Changes

One of the biggest changes for GoDaddy will be the website. Under Blake’s supervision and management, the site will appear less technical. That can be huge for people that don’t have the technical background for websites and design. This new look will be appealing for small business owners and marketers. With GoDaddy’s new look, the Media Temple website will be able to cater to more of a technical type of audience. The new appearances will be able to compliment both sites well, and make the overall experience for the user better.

Media Temple’s Independence

Another big surprise about the acquisition is the fact that Media Temple will be operated as a separate company, and will not be integrated into GoDaddy. Any discounts and coupons will not be interchangeable between the two companies. Virb is a website builder acquired by Media Temple in 2012 will not be included in this deal. The original founders/investors will be purchasing Virb.

The new changes for Media Temple and GoDaddy are going to be new and exciting. With a bright new management team and an infusion of cash, GoDaddy is proving to be a fierce leader in technology and interactive with new improvements for both its existing customers and new customers. The information and data provided can be found at www.smallbiztrends.com.

Google recently released its new version of Penguin 2.1 on October 4, 2013. This release would make it the 5th release of Penguin. What does all of this information mean? 1% of the searches will be impacted. The interesting part about all of the Penguin updates is all of the previous releases of Penguin prior to the release of 2.1.

The History Of Google’s Penguin

Just where did this spam fighting algorithm come from and why so many updates? Let’s briefly go over when the releases happened and what was the impact of each.

Penguin 1 was released on April 24, 2012. The impact of this release was around 3.1% of the queries. This version targeted keyword stuffing, link schemes, doorway pages, and duplicate content.

Penguin 2 was released on May 26, 2012, but only impacted less that 0.1% of queries. This particular version was called a “data refresh” and the first update of the Penguin series.

Penguin 3 was released on October 5, 2012 impacting approximately 0.3% of the queries. The update affected searches for multiple languages.

Penguin 4 aka Penguin 2.0 was released on May 22, 2013. The impact of this version impacted 2.3% of the queries. 2.0 had a new twist that should stop all of the spam.

Penguin 5 aka Penguin 2.1 was released on October 4, 2013 with a 1% impact. Second generation technology is being implemented to improve the issues with spam.

Google’s overall search algorithm is monitored by Penguin. If you are in a situation where you have noticed a drop in traffic, then it’s time to take a look at your site. Bad links and poor quality sites are going to be red flagged, therefore you will have to improve your site. Until Penguin sees the content is removed, you are going to have a problem. The best way to avoid this problem is to check your content and links.

Millions of Internet users are familiar with Yahoo and Google because of all of the features each of these sites utilize. However, most would be very surprised to hear that Yahoo is once again the leader of the pack. Yahoo has a very strong CEO with a voice that is grabbing attention right and left. Marissa Mayer is taking the aged Internet power house and making Yahoo a force to be reckoned with.

Yahoo Strong Stability

An interesting fact about Yahoo is that the site was never really that far behind Google at any point in time. The two powerhouse sites have always been close in terms of traffic. In July, 197 million people visited the Yahoo with a strong second place going to Google with 192 million people visiting during the same time period. Yahoo’s decision to appoint Marissa Mayer as the CEO has been a great one, because she has been able to grab headlines right and left for Yahoo.

Where Did This Boost Come From?

If one was to review Yahoo’s traffic for 2013, the traffic is going to demonstrate Yahoo was never very far behind. Even before Mayer came on as the chief executive, Yahoo’s traffic was holding on in the ranking.

The most important category to focus on was making sure mobile devices were paid close attention too. Mayer made a bold decision to give $200 million dollars to the development of mobile apps and making sure every mobile user would have a friendly experience with Yahoo.

Revamping the Yahoo experience to make it even better than before. Mayer’s first huge makeover was Yahoo Mail in December. Right after Yahoo Mail got a makeover, next came the home page of Yahoo was also re-designed. Improving and re-designing Yahoo’s sites make a huge difference.

Yahoo.com is going to be a very exciting website to watch over the next year with all of the amazing improvements, and the apps are going to be even better. With Mayer on board each person following the improvements of Yahoo is going to be pleasantly surprised with her innovative spirit and her passion to make Yahoo be a huge success.

HTML5 provides a great example of how so many of the companies listed in The Fortune 500 aren’t necessarily the innovators when it comes to their design. Analyzing how these huge companies are currently designing their digital assets will be essential in finding out the trends that are working for all of these companies.

HTML5 For Corporate Websites

Let’s take some time to review the statistics of HTML5 and how effective it has been with companies and generating revenue.

Among Fortune 500 companies 30.6 percent are using HTML5 for their company websites.

An interesting fact: The 153 companies that did use HTML5 of their digital properties in 2012 generated more profits than the 161 companies using XHTML 1.0 Transitional. Yet, XHTML 1.0 Transitional is still the most popular with 32.2 percent.

HTML 4.0 Transitional and HTML 4.01 Strict has only a mere 7.8 percent when combined together.

With HTML5 and XHTML 1.0 coming so close together percentage wise, it would make most industry professional want to predict whether or not HTML5 will slowly begin a take over for the 2014. We all know when a product or service increases revenue, it gains positive attention, and users will begin to make the switch. What does the future of HTML5 have in store?

Individual business owners and start up companies now getting a better selection of hosting options as both the technology industry and consumer demands are rapidly changing for the better. Better packages for hosting options are now letting the consumer decide which package is best for their business.

What Is Shared Web Hosting?

The first fact about shared web hosting is it is one of two services offered by web hosting providers.

Shared web hosting operates on a single server and a single operating system with multiple websites on the same server.

This is the perfect service for a first time novice website owner to use. It’s very economical and this mode of web hosting is also easy to use for individuals or a business with a smaller database.

All of the websites share the same IP address as well, and the server host name is the same too.

What Is VPS Hosting?

This particular type of hosting was designed to be cheaper in comparison to using a dedicated shared server.

All of the websites or users use the same server, but there is a high level of privacy along with insulation to maintain the user’s privacy.

Each and every VPS client gets their own IP address, firewall, and port. Not only does this service provide privacy, but the pricing is excellent as well.

There is very little hardware associated with VPS hosting and the software isn’t difficult to master either, which makes this type of hosting very reliable.

When it comes time to try and make a decision with what option to choose from, it’s always important to consult with the web hosting service provider you are thinking of choosing. Getting a second opinion is always recommended if you are a beginning or you are launching a start up company. A web hosting service provider will be able to help you determine which option will be best for your company, and also be what you are seeking as far as privacy and storage options.

As I walked out of my local big-box electronics store this weekend, I found myself thinking of the IT glory days. My memories and that nostalgic feeling were the catalyst for sharing the following list with you: a list of those IT relics I still hold dear.

1. Old school computer magazines

In the 80s growing up, I can remember over those old computer magazines containing source codes for my Commodore 64 and other machines of the period. I couldn’t wait for our hour trip to the closest mall where I would buy a handful of the latest editions.

2. Computer stores for computers, not the gadget big box

It was a treat to walk in my town’s corner computer store and scour the shelves for custom cases, system boards, or the most recent video card. Nowadays, I can’t seem to find these items because the only computer stores available are the big box variety in which electronic subtopics are suspended from the ceiling on big blue signs. If I want to buy a new motherboard, I have to consult the Internet. For me, it’s just not the same.

3. Cases that were really the desktop variety

Tower cases are ok, but I can remember the true desktop cases in which I could easily plug my removable storage device or media. These were right there, accessible. I know, I can still do these things with the modern tower or all in one monitors, but there’s something to be said for functionality, even if it’s not so economic on space.

4. They don’t make ‘em like that anymore

My brother just purchased a new mouse for his home computer. Not to poke fun, but his selection of pink polka dots (to please the wife and little girls) would not be my choice. No, it’s not the design that irritates me so much. It’s the lack of durability- the quality of today’s products seems to have taken a nosedive. Why do the mice and keyboards I find on the store shelf all seem so flimsy? I miss the old IBM, Commodore, and Apple keyboards that weighed about as much as today’s monitor screens. They were solid in my hand, the keys fit my fingers, and I felt like I was actually getting my money’s worth.

5. Hello? Is anybody there?

When the hourglass or the colorful spinning ball refuse to go away, I am reminiscent of the old school help desk. In the old days, a person knocked at your cubicle and helped you out with your computer ills. I was able to get to know all the faces and personalities with whom I worked. Now, I remotely connect with the site’s help tech. I know, it makes the department more productive. They can help so many more people. But, I miss the real-people side. The real deal.

6. No installation necessary

I can remember when the program I needed to use would run from a disk. Insert the removable media, use as you need it, and store in a protective sleeve until the next time. No need to install programs, taking up precious space on your hard drive. Games that were like this could easily be stuffed in my overnight bag and taken to friends’ houses to play on their computers. Sigh.

7. Code manipulation

Back in the glory days of the 1980s, I could boot up my Commodore 64 and make changes to the software’s code as I saw fit.
