If there is one item you want to include in your online ecommerce site this holiday season, it is video. A recent report by video commerce solution provider Invodo has the data to prove what many have known, video boosts sales.

Video engages online shoppers and has a direct influence on buying decisions. But don’t just take our word for it – the facts speak for themselves:

People who watch videos are almost twice as likely to make a purchase

Two-thirds of video watchers see at least 80% of the video

One-third of videos are viewed on mobile devices, with mobile device viewing 24% higher than desktop viewing

When it comes to videos and their effectiveness, 78% were rated 4 or 5 stars, meaning they are effective and add value to the online shopping experience.

Businesses have taken note of the positive impact of videos, with 75% of retailers and manufacturers expecting to increase their video budget over the next few years.

Anyone who is serious about creating an online presence and generating sales must include video as part of the overall web experience. Video is now a proven way to engage your customers and increase revenue.

Vimeo, an online video site, announced few weeks ago that creators will now have an opportunity to make money from their films and videos. No, the films won’t be inundated with advertisements. Rather, they?ll have the online equivalent of a tip jar.

How Tip Jar works

Exactly as the name suggests, once Tip Jar is enabled, viewers can click a link that reads “Tip this video,” which will allow them to donate a sum between $0.99 and $500 to the video. PayPal will manage all payments for which credit cards are not utilized.

The nitty gritty

Tip Jar currently only works for videos played at Vimeo.com

The company is working on adding the Tip Jar feature to embedded videos

You don’t have to be logged in to tip videos

85% of the funding gross is given to the content creator

The future of Tip Jar

Akin to crowdfunding platforms such as Kickstarter and Indiegogo, Tip Jar has great potential. Nonprofit organizations can utilize Tip Jar to start scholarship funds or allow for seamless donations.

Think of the possibilities for emerging musicians or artists in other genres. Building a fan base can now mean monetary support for creating more content.

Google has added a new type of instant previews to Google search results. These previews are designed specifically for video results.

The video instant previews show you several frames from a video and may even play the video preview when you mouse over the thumbnail image.

How does it work? Search Google or Google Video search and look for a video result, hover your mouse, or click on the magnifying glass preview icon. A drop down of four frames may be displayed on the right side of the icon. By placing your mouse pointer over the video preview frames, the video selection may begin to play on your screen.

The benefit? As explained by Google’s Daniel M. Russell: “REALLY handy when the video results are more diverse, and you can?t really tell them apart except by clicking though to the result.”

HTML5 is still very new way of displaying video on web. On an official YouTube blog we can read that the company has to use Flash technology in order to meet all the needs of a site like YouTube. HTML5 < video > tag does not provide yet a good enough experience for viewers as well as content creators.

An official statement for apiblog.youtube.com:
There’s been a lot of discussion lately about whether or not the HTML5 < video > tag is going to replace Flash Player for video distribution on the web. We’ve been excited about the HTML5 effort and < video > tag for quite a while now, and most YouTube videos can now be played via our HTML5 player. This work has shown us that, while the < video > tag is a big step forward for open standards, the Adobe Flash Platform will continue to play a critical role in video distribution.

It’s important to understand what a site like YouTube needs from the browser in order to provide a good experience for viewers as well as content creators. We need to do more than just point the browser at a video file like the image tag does – there’s a lot more to it than just retrieving and displaying a video. The < video > tag certainly addresses the basic requirements and is making good progress on meeting others, but the < video > tag does not currently meet all the needs of a site like YouTube.
