Operation Overlord (also known as D-Day and Operation Neptune ) was the codename for the Allied invasion of northwest Europe. Operation Neptune began on D-Day it is 6 June 1944 (exactly 66 years ago) and ended on 30 June 1944. By this time, the Allies had established a firm foothold in Normandy.
